Question 1181: To ask the Minister for Agriculture and Food if the definition of peat soils incorporated in Schedule 1 of the Nitrates Regulations 2006 (details supplied) as soils with an organic matter content exceeding 20 per cent will also be applied to soils used for forestry. [29081/06]

The soil classification used in respect of the 2006 Nitrates Regulations is for one purpose only â the application of fertiliser for agricultural purposes. The classification system for soils, including peat, which is used in forestry has much wider application, including species selection, estimation of potential rooting depth, potential yield, crop stability etc. It is not proposed to change this.
