Information provided to date to the Student Support Unit of my Department regarding the socio-economic background of third level grant recipients is being verified at present with the Awarding Authorities. I expect to be able to provide the information, in so far as it is available, to the Deputy in the near future.

Question 496: To ask the Minister for Education and Science the reason a sworn affidavit of addresses for a higher education grant for a person (details supplied) County Cork is not accepted by a local authority as proof of the person's residence, in view of that authority having advised the person to arrange the aforementioned affidavit and having advised them on the way in which to word the document. Under my Departments four maintenance grants Schemes, in order for a student to be assessed as an independent mature candidate, the candidate must provide the relevant Local Authority/VEC with adequate proof of independent residence from 1st October of the year preceding entry to an approved course.

Officials in my Department have been in contact with the assessing authority in this case, concerning the student referred to by the Deputy and have been advised that a "Statutory Declaration" was provided by the student stating the addresses at which the student resided in recent years. The declaration does not prove, to the satisfaction of the City Council, independent residence from the parents as both the student's address and that of the parents appear to be the same.
