Question 324: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the extent to which the Garda has adopted bicycle mounted policing; if pilot schemes have been shown to reveal effective results; if he has plans to extend such methods of policing throughout the Dublin metropolitan area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda mountain bike unit was introduced on a pilot basis, on 5 June 2001, in the Tallaght and Raheny Garda districts of the Dublin metropolitan region, DMR. In February 2002 a review conducted by the Garda authorities found that the pilot project proved to be a very successful policing initiative.

Since that time the Garda mountain bike unit has been expanded and units are now established at Pearse Street, Kevin Street, Store Street,Fitzgibbon Street, Tallaght, Raheny, Blanchardstown, Blackrock, Ballymun, Ballyfermot, Bridewell, Bray, Clondalkin, Coolock, Dún Laoghaire, Ronanstown and Finglas in the DMR and in a number of Garda districts outside the DMR.

I am also informed that the Garda Commissioner has approved the further expansion of the Garda mountain bike unit, which will take place early in 2005 with the establishment of new units in a number of Garda districts in the DMR and other regions.
