Question 506: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the extent to which he has plans to excavate historical sites other than in the course of modern development works, with particular reference to the educational value of such locations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department has no proposals to undertake excavations of historical sites for educational purposes. Funding is provided by my Department to the Royal Irish Academy, RIA, which administers grants to approved research excavation projects and also to the Heritage Council which, in turn, supports the archaeological research body, Discovery Programme.
