Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: Committee Stage (Resumed)

I thank the Minister for indicating that she will reflect. This amendment might allow us to proceed in terms of the delivery of the audiovisual media services directive, which everybody wants to do, and would give the scaffolding required by the Minister. It would, perhaps, allow us to avoid an unfortunate and unintended situation whereby we may have an online safety code that ends up being out of step with a provision of the digital services directive. The amendment would allow us to avoid that. There will be plenty for the new commission to do, but the amendment would allow that tackling these areas, among the many to be tackled, would not be done until at a suitable time when guidance is there in terms of the digital services directive. This would ensure that, for example, even though the commission will regulate a much wider set of services than the digital services directive, they would be aligned in terms of the approach taken. I thank the Minister for indicating that she will look to that issue. I will withdraw the amendment in that context.
