Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage

Deputy Simon HarrisI have very little to add to the position I already outlined. Many of these debates were held during the discussion on the 2013 legislation. The reality is that we are talking about the emergency provision in the legislation in respect of which, as Senator Higgins eloquently outlined, there is an immediate risk to the life or health of the woman. Of course doctors deliver babies. Of course doctors endeavour to save life - of that there is no doubt - and so do women, by the way. The measure refers to where there is an immediate risk, however. I do not believe we should put in further restrictions in this section, on the emergency provision, than we have in the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act.
