Children's Health Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages
2:30 pm
Joan Freeman (Independent) | Oireachtas source
I support Senator Devine's point that this board must be comprised of experts with lifelong experience in this area. The appointment of people just for their name or for the sake of it would be unwelcome. I also support Senator Devine's proposal in amendment No. 2 regarding the addition of the words "mental health". This amendment is important because it highlights the importance of mental healthcare and it shows that children's mental health must be looked after in conjunction with their physical health. It is necessary to spell out a commitment to mental health in this way because far too often, mental health has not been a priority and children today are suffering as a result. In this regard, one needs only to look to the shocking situations in Wexford and Cork.
I welcome the establishment of children's health Ireland and I am hopeful for the positive changes that it will bring.
