My colleague, Senator White, mentioned the increased number of burglaries in the past year. Each and every part of the country has witnessed that. Only last weekend a young man who opens and closes a church on the Cooley Peninsula was at the church to close it at 9.10 p.m. in his new jeep. It takes him a couple of minutes to close the church. When he came out the jeep was gone. The problem is the quick access to Northern Ireland because within five or six minutes anyone committing a burglary on the Cooley Peninsula or in my home town of Carlingford can be in a different jurisdiction. I call for an increase in the number of gardaí in Border counties in particular because of the number of access points to Northern Ireland.
