Master Plan for the City of Dublin: Motion
10:30 am
Diarmuid Wilson (Fianna Fail) | Oireachtas source
If Dublin was a functioning modern city, that is what we should have done. It is time to begin the process of co-ordinating because there are so many Departments involved in this, that and the other. A directly elected mayor with the requisite powers and finances could work on getting the city to operate in the way it should, just like any other major capital city in Europe. It is time we resourced the Garda Síochána properly in this city so that it can protect the citizens of this city and the people who visit it. People are being assaulted on a daily basis and hundreds are in fear during the day, not to mention at nighttime.
I congratulate Senator Norris for what has been a very interesting debate. I had not intended to speak on it but hopefully we can keep this issue on the boil.
