I support Senator Cullinane. Consideration should be given to the remit of the Ombudsman for Children in respect of complaints for children in detention and I call on the Minister to give that consideration. It is a reasonable proposal.

Moreover, I call on the Minister to give consideration to the fact that while detention schools are inspected annually by HIQA, the standards and criteria for children in detention schools have not been revised or updated since 2004. They were adopted in 2008. Given all that we are doing here, I recommend that the standards should be reviewed to ensure they adhere to models of best practice.
