I stated that the legislation declares that a donor is not the parent of a child born as a result of that procedure and has no parental rights and duties in respect of the child. I suggest that the majority of Irish people would be appalled by this notion. These issues should be addressed in the context of a Bill purporting to regulate the assisted human reproduction industry and should not be rushed through to facilitate an easier passage for the forthcoming referendum on marriage. This is what the timing is all about.
