It is high time we had a searching discussion in this House about the operation of the current television licence fee, the proposed broadcasting charge, and particularly the role of the national broadcaster. It seems to me that the media are the great unaccountable, and largely unexamined, force in modern Ireland. It has long been of concern that many such people - whose salaries, which are sometimes large, are funded by the taxpayer - are off on a frolic of their own, engaged in seeking to manipulate public opinion on occasions and shaping the direction of the country, but without being accountable in any way.
