My amendments are to sections 7 and 8. On the whole, I welcome these sections, which confirm current practice. The sections are useful in that they also clarify issues that some people did not know existed. In my amendment, I wish to substitute the word "may be" for the word "is". Section 7, which deals with the risk of loss of life from physical illness, states: "It shall be lawful to carry out a medical procedure in respect of a pregnant woman in accordance with this section in the course of which, or as a result of which, an unborn human life is ended". Amendment No. 14 seeks to change "is ended" to "may be ended". I understand it is not intentional that the baby's life would be ended.
