Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act 2009: Motion
5:40 pm
Averil Power (Fianna Fail) | Oireachtas source
Sorry; I will say it endorsed terrorist activities in this country in the past. It had a very close connection, a deep and personal relationship, between three people involved in the Sinn Féin party and terrorist groups in the country that led to the deaths, as pointed out earlier in our discussion of the previous motion, of innocent civilians and members of the Garda Síochána. Innocent lives were taken, North and South, over an extended period. I am not surprised that Sinn Féin opposed the last motion to extend the Act on terrorist-related crime. It is extraordinary that the party opposes the use of the Special Criminal Court to tackle gangland crime. On the one hand, Sinn Féin representatives in north Dublin and other areas have strongly condemned gangland activities in their local areas, but on the other, the party's national representatives have come in here and voted against necessary legislation.
