Jimmy Deenihan (Kerry North-West Limerick, Fine Gael)

It is unique in my 30 years in national politics for both Houses to debate an issue simultaneously. It is even rarer for the same issue to come up in Private Members' business, so it is a first. I compliment and congratulate Senators on raising this issue. We live in a democracy and must listen to each other and to constructive criticism. This is what makes our democracy so strong. I am delighted the debate is taking place in both the Seanad and the Dáil. It is good for the arts. I recognise that the Taoiseach appointed these Senators to the Seanad and gave them the freedom to say what they want. The Taoiseach deserves recognition for that.
