National Lottery: Motion
5:00 pm
Michael D'Arcy (Fine Gael)
I did. Why are we here? We are here as a result of a motion. The Minister has been clear. A tender process must be adhered to and it is a matter of law that the process is adhered to. We are also here as a result of choice. We have had this discussion in the Chamber previously. The choice is about whether we are required to move State assets that we can move today, if necessary. We have held a debate with Senator Barrett on the importance or otherwise of certain assets. We are not selling a lottery. We are putting up a licence for tender. That is an important aspect that we cannot simply ignore. I agree with some of the points made. The slush fund ability of the way the sports capital programme operated was disgraceful and appalling but, if memory serves me correctly, there has not been a sports capital application since 2008.
