Seanad debates

Tuesday, 13 March 2012

A number of Members raised the question of the schools programme. Everybody should welcome it. I know people would like to see more money being spent but we are doing our best to get the public finances back into some order after what was left to us. We would all like to see more money being spent on schools, local government, social welfare and many other areas but it is not available. That is the simple fact. We hope to get the best possible value from the construction of these schools and irrespective of whether the builders will be from Northern Ireland, Senator Barrett is right that we must get the best value for these schools. It is to be hoped the schools programme will give employment to the 15,000 people to whom it is estimated it will give such.
