Senator Paul Coghlan has explained the position and the Taoiseach has discussed the matter with the Cardinal and the Archbishop. I understand the Catholic bishops are in contact with Rome with a view to determining whether the Pope wishes to visit. If he indicates that he does, the Government has stated it will respond positively and that an invitation will be forthcoming. I hope the amendment will not be pressed, as it could embarrass the Pope.
