Health Awareness and Physical Fitness: Motion

Physical education is a subject which provides us with a platform to redesign the focus of our educational system. While the subject, as currently formatted, gives rise to many positives, it is certainly under-utilised or, perhaps more accurately, ignored. It is not an exam subject and I strongly recommend that this be changed as part of the ongoing review taking place within the Department of Education and Skills. Furthermore, budgetary constraints cannot be allowed to stop the reforms outlined in Senator Eamonn Coghlan's report on physical education because the stakes are much too high for them not to be implemented. Ministers or officials who argue that we cannot move to make physical education an exam subject, with broader parameters which encompass aspects of healthy living or life skills, could leave themselves open to charges of being extremely lacking in vision.
