Regarding mental health, in response to a private Members' debate yesterday on the part of the main Opposition party the Minister made a statement in the Dáil to the effect that the VHI could save 10% of its costs. This is the most significant statement in some time concerning savings that could be made for people. The increases in VHI costs, to which we referred last week, need to be addressed. If the Minister knows of ways in which there might be a reduction of 10% it would be greatly useful and practical to have a debate in the House on the subject. I do not refer to the kind of debate in which the House would have a go at the Minister but to one in which the Minister would have an opportunity to outline the ways in which such a reduction could be implemented, to which Senators could respond and develop. It is very important and relevant because from next month people will receive increased bills from the VHI.

Regarding the meeting today between the leaders of both parties in Government might the House be given a precise outline of the legislation which both parties intend to have passed? This is crucial.
