In 1980 I was offered a place in University College Cork to undertake an arts degree. I did not qualify for grants and the fee for the course was IRĀ£3,000. Thirty years on if people believe the registration fee is anywhere close to the economic value of a course tuition fee, they are not living in the real world. There is heavy subsidisation of third level education. That must be the focus of the debate on this matter.
