I note the points raised and I agree with many of them. The Seanad is under intense scrutiny. I take umbrage at the suggestion that the Seanad is irrelevant and should be abolished. The majority of Senators do an excellent job. They are committed to their work on legislation at all stages. I reject the suggestion that we are irrelevant.

It is up to all of us, particularly the Leader, to review the situation, to make sure legislation comes to the Seanad and that Minsters are available to deal with it. Otherwise, we might as well go out of existence. I do not want that to happen. I have been here for a very long time and feel I have done a very good job. I speak for myself, as other Senators can speak for themselves.

I feel vulnerable at this time and I do not know how we will come out of this difficulty. Let us all work together.
