When the Bill was first introduced in the Seanad in 2005, little did I think it would not be passed until 2008. I accept the Minister's point that a number of Schedules, etc., had to be included. Fine Gael has pointed out on numerous occasions that co-operation in respect of policing and criminal law matters is imperative at EU level, particularly if organised crime, drug trafficking and human trafficking are to be combatted in an effective manner. In respect of the forthcoming referendum on the Lisbon treaty, we should stress the co-operation that exists in respect of mutual assistance.

I compliment everyone involved in the preparation of this legislation. It has been a hard slog. I congratulate the officials in the Department with regard to the work they did on the Bill. I also congratulate the Minister and his staff.

The country will be a better place as a result of the implementation of this legislation. I hope it will have the desired effect in the context of bringing to book criminals, fraudsters and others and that we will have a safer society as a result.
