Everybody knows that individual councils are spending anything from €70,000 to €100,000 annually and this is a significant extra imposition on their budgets. One councillor said to me last week that given that this is mandatory, it should be opened up to the local Conradh na Gaeilge groups. It would be a way of funding good, well meaning local groups that are actively promoting the language.
