I thank the Cathaoirleach for selecting this matter and the Minister of State for coming before the House. I refer to two issues concerning the town of Ballygar, County Galway, that have been raised with me by many people in the town and its surrounding areas, namely its water supply and sewerage system.

As far as the water supply is concerned, major concerns have been expressed about its quality, colour, taste and content. Concerns have also been expressed about the amount of chlorine and other additives in the public water supply. As far as the reserve supply is concerned, the pumps are not working. What plans are there to upgrade the water system? I understand the proposed scheme will require a new source and note from my discussion with Galway County Council that the scheme is listed in eighth place on the council's assessment of needs in respect of water schemes. It is not actually included at all in the water services investment programme. Perhaps the Minister can confirm my hope that it can be included in the next rolling programme from the Department.

As for the sewerage system, it is difficult to envisage any development in this town given its sewerage scheme is so poor. There have been many complaints about the smell from the treatment plant and one cannot have development without adequate sewerage and water supply. Hence, I want to see some progress on this matter. According to the county council's assessment of needs in respect of sewerage schemes, the scheme is in 17th position, but is not included in the water services investment programme. These two issues are very important and I hope the Minister of State will indicate what will happen regarding the water and sewerage schemes in Ballygar.
