I would allow Garda recruits to be trained with social workers and others, alongside whom they will be working for the rest of their professional lives. I would also provide for lateral entry to the Garda Síochána at different levels. I have already made my views on the ombudsman clear to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. He knows what they are and I will not labour them now. I believe, however, that visibility is a very important issue.
