Last Wednesday, in the final hours before the Westminster Parliament was dissolved, the British Government passed the inquiries Bill. This legislation neuters the promised independent inquiry into the murder of solicitor Pat Finucane, preventing all evidence being heard and the full inquiry being held in public. The Canadian judge, Mr. Cory, who first recommended an independent inquiry, said that he cannot contemplate any self-respecting Canadian judge accepting an appointment to an inquiry constituted under the proposed Act.
