Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Committee Stage.

There is no law and order on our streets and that is due to a serious lack of a Garda presence. Until such time as this problem is tackled, we will have to revert to the earlier closing times. This will not be a popular move and it will probably not be supported here this evening. In light of the opinion expressed by the Liquor Licensing Commission, I am surprised that the Minister has not tackled this problem and stated that we must revert to earlier closing times. That is why I have tabled these amendments. I ask the Minister to consider accepting them until he is in a position to appoint the 2,000 additional gardaĆ to police the streets.
