Northern Ireland: Statements.

We all hoped that the declaration that we awaited last week would come through and that the Taoiseach and Prime Minister Blair would be able to bring finality to the peace process, for that is how I regard it – not as finality to the peace but that we should have peace without there being a process any longer. I also made the point last week on the Order of Business that the judgment of history will be particularly severe on those who do not grasp this opportunity. What we saw was depressing. I quote the famous phrase, "But when the floodwaters have subsided and we look across the landscape, we see again in all their glory, the dreary steeples of Fermanagh and Tyrone."
