Official Languages (Equality) Bill 2002: Committee Stage (Resumed). SECTION 9.

I am aware that Senator Ryan has always promoted the Irish language and that his heart is in the right place in that regard. I wish that, like the Senator, I had the ability to express myself in Irish. Mistakes have been made too often in the past such as in pre-Bord na Gaeilge days. All too often there was an enticement to be dictatorial. Those who were so anxious and so committed to the promotion of the use of the Irish language sometimes had an attitude that smacked of elitism and arrogance towards the poor souls like me and others who are anxious to speak Irish, even though we are not able to be articulate in the Irish language. I have a vocabulary that I am unable to put together in the form of structured speech.
