Europe has also been referred to and the crisis has deeply divided its member states. I was happy to see that, at last night's meeting of the European Council, the EU has begun to lead the way in seeking to re-establish unity of purpose among the international community. Significant challenges lie ahead and we will overcome them only if we act in concert with a common purpose. The Government will play its part in the efforts to ensure that the UN system overcomes this crisis and maintains its role at the centre of an effective system of collective international security.
