Seanad debates

I was particularly taken by the contribution of Senator O'Toole and I found myself in agreement with much of what he had to say. Like him, I am not a pacifist. I believe war can be justified in certain circumstances. The former American President, Jimmy Carter, said on one occasion that war may sometimes be the lesser of two evils. From what I can ascertain, he appears to be opposed to this war and I concur with this view. I do not accept that this war is justified. Over the past 50 years the United Nations has been the arbiter on the world stage to intervene in such situations. In the past few days the United States and the UK have acted without a mandate from the United Nations to engage in war in Iraq. While in the long term it may well have become necessary to use force to change the regime in Iraq, I do not accept the justification for the haste with which the attack was made.
