Seanad debates

Friday, 21 March 2003

We are all aware of the fact that the military conflict has begun, and we talked about the television pictures being broadcast on a daily basis, something about which we are all concerned. The Government, the Taoiseach, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Cowen, and the Minister of State, Deputy Tom Kitt, were actively involved in trying to prevent what has ultimately taken place. The Government can be proud of the work it has done to date in that regard. Nonetheless, the war has started and we must now work towards a quick and peaceful resolution. We must be in a position to provide humanitarian relief where possible. Everybody accepts that there must not be a unilateral or bilateral approach to the rebuilding of Iraq, in which Ireland will have a role.
