Seanad debates

I wish to make it clear that I am not anti-American; none of us is. I spent some time in America as a student in the late 1960s, when it was a type of Camelot for all of us. It is sad that such a splendid nation, which has been considered so benevolent, is being reduced to a position in which most of the world views it as the greatest bully yet. In the United States Congress a few days ago, a woman who had been asked to take on the task of improving the image of the United States in Islamic countries informed the relevant committee that she was resigning from her job. She had found such a vast difference between the image America wished to project and the reality that it made her task utterly impossible. Therefore, she resigned. I regret to see the United States in the position it is today.
