One of the Senators mentioned staffing. The staff drive and deliver the service, but there is a misconception about them. There were 68,000 staff in the health services in 1997 and 96,000 in 2002. It should be noted that this increased staffing level includes 340 extra consultants, 5,800 nurses – not the 2,000 quoted by Senator Feighan – and over 600 training places.
