Significant events, such as the foot and mouth disease crisis and the fall-out from the 11 September tragedy, have affected the industry, but they were well flagged. Equally, the ITIC's examination of the industry in the form of the Tansey report pointed out a deep deterioration in price competitiveness since 2000.
