While the inspector expressed concern about the inadequate skill mix and lack of flexibility within many mental health services, he welcomed the introduction of new measures aimed at attracting and retaining nursing staff and the development of higher level courses for nurses wishing to follow a clinical career path. For the first time it was agreed that the registration programme in psychiatric and disability nursing would be at degree level. This new degree programme will replace the three year diploma programme.
