Crime Levels: Statements.
The Government regards the situation as one which requires in-depth analysis of the underlying causes of crime as well as priority action to deal with particular issues. Our response is multifaceted. The programme for Government includes proposals in relation to many of the issues I have already touched upon, such as innovative public order legislation, targeted Garda operations, a strict enforcement of the liquor licensing laws and an extension in the use of closed-circuit television systems. Of particular note in this list is the major expansion of Garda CCTV systems currently under way. Systems are due to be installed in the following 17 areas: Athlone, Ballyfermot, Bray, Carlow, Castlebar, Clondalkin, Clonmel, Dundalk, DĂșn Laoghaire, Ennis, Finglas, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, Waterford, Sligo and Tallaght.
