As everyone will be aware, at present the larger countries have the right to nominate two members to the European Commission while smaller states such as Ireland have the right to nominate one member. Under the Treaty of Nice, Ireland, which has a population of about 4 million people, will have the same rights in the appointment of a commission as Germany, which has a population of over 82 million people.
