The serious fear among the members of that campaign and among the 26,000 who signed the petition, 9,000 of...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Ciarán Cannon: Go raibh maith agat a Chathaoirligh. I welcome the Minister and her officials. In her opening remarks she made the suggestion, with which I agree wholeheartedly, that public service media plays a vital role in the well-being of our society and the health of our democracy. I think everyone in this room acknowledges that, which is why we are so deeply concerned about the ongoing difficulties...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Ciarán Cannon: In relation to the aforementioned valued and vital role of public service media in the well-being of our society and the health of our democracy, that trickles all the way down to local communities nationwide. I will talk later about how we fund public service media in the future, but in the hope that we find a sustainable funding model, what conversations has the Minister had with the newly...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Ciarán Cannon: Does the Minister have a general timeline for that? Has it been impacted or impeded by the ongoing controversies within RTÉ itself?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Ciarán Cannon: In terms of all that has played out within RTÉ, what happens when the Minister goes to colleagues in government seeking to put in place a sustainable and robust funding model for public service broadcasting in the future? Such a funding model is something that Fine Gael wholeheartedly supports. We made a submission to the Future of Media Commission arguing that the television licence...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Ciarán Cannon: The last time the Future of Media Commission went to the Government with a suggestion of an alternative funding model it was rejected by the Government at the time. Recently the Taoiseach, Deputy Varadkar, said this is a nettle that we are going to have to grasp. We are going to have to pass legislation within the lifetime of this Government to provide a firm foundation of sustainable...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Coimisiún na Meán on the 2023 Work Programme (27 Sep 2023)

Ciarán Cannon: I welcome the witnesses and wish them every success in their respective roles. They are doing an extraordinarily important job on behalf of the Irish people. It is great to see Coimisiún na Meán in place and finally having the legislative backing to do the work it needs to do. I have a couple of observations that might prompt questions. Coimisiún na Meán has an...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Coimisiún na Meán on the 2023 Work Programme (27 Sep 2023)

Ciarán Cannon: That is very true. I happen to be unusual in thinking that in general social media has been a force for good. Do not shoot me. I think it is the most recent expression of our deep desire as a species to communicate with one another. We have been communicating with one another from when we sat around campfires trying to develop early language through to speaking to Neil Armstrong on the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety: Discussion (27 Sep 2023)

Ciarán Cannon: Deputy Lowry has absented himself. He said he is meeting the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform. During that meeting he will be making the case for additional funding for the Garda and the RSA to further their aims in making our roads safer. I thank Deputy Lowry for that. I thank all the witnesses for being here...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety: Discussion (27 Sep 2023)

Ciarán Cannon: Okay. I am concerned the development and the going live of the online portal has somehow become enmeshed in the whole body-worn cameras legislation. Right now, if any of us were to go to our local Garda station with a piece of video footage showing a distinct infringement or violation of the road traffic safety laws, the Garda can use that evidence right now to get a successful prosecution.
