Social Welfare Bill 2022: Second Stage (Resumed) (23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: A robust and adequate social welfare system is the cornerstone of any republic, the sworn duty and aim of which should be to look after the most vulnerable and the less well-off in society. The nation's population will be healthier and freer to enjoy their life, if they know there is a safety net for them and their families if they fall on hard times. In the current cost-of-living crisis,...

Vote 35 - Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: The pilot scheme was very successful, as shown by the 9,000 applicants. Maybe some time in future we can broaden this out. People need a living wage as well. I think people on the scheme are given €300 per week.

Select Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 35 - Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: Yes, and the pandemic unemployment payment was €350, so we accepted people need at least that to live, at least. Maybe we could broaden that out in future. I spoke to some of the people who availed of it and they were happy because it got them off the hook. They are in a desperate situation because they are artists and they act in different ways and think in different ways. That is...

Select Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 35 - Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: They probably thought if they asked for €350 they would not get it. The Minister knows how it works. In all seriousness, we need to bring it up to the living wage. It needs to get to that stage because as I said, artists are really precious to us. They lift us out of certain things in life and they really need help. Most of them work on a whim anyway. They might work this week...

Vote 35 - Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: There may be some sort of scope to expand or broaden the scheme. Many artists are single bands or artists, particularly pub entertainers and so on. They found it difficult to apply for and get it. Maybe that could be considered as well.

Select Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: National Tourism Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I do not need to explain to the Minister the importance of tourism to Ireland. I think there are 250,000 or 260,000 people working in the industry, which is phenomenal. It is growing through different sorts of music and that type of thing we are doing. It is important that Fáilte Ireland be funded properly. Bigger schemes are coming on. The industry suffered a lot during the...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I am inundated with inquiries from people with medical cards who cannot access dental services in County Wexford. The scheme is collapsing and is clearly in a state of decline. Their dedication to their communities is second to none and their passion for their job is exemplary. They are often the first on the scene for emergencies such as car crashes, cardiac arrests and suicide attempts. They are...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: As the housing crisis worsens, severe pressure on emergency accommodation is becoming insurmountable.
