Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Regulation of the English Language Sector: Discussion (Resumed). (21 May 2024)

Sorca Clarke: I thank the witnesses for attending. I will follow up on a statement made by Mr. Moynes. I understand where he is coming from in terms of safeguarding reputations, the high quality of education and the false prospectus that has been put out there. One issue raised both with the committee and also with me is that students are restricted to working between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Regulation of the English Language Sector: Discussion (Resumed). (21 May 2024)

Sorca Clarke: I have quite a few qualifications, all of which I obtained as an adult learner in evening programmes rather than in full time education. A lecturer would often come forward and ask someone whether they are free to come in for a few hours on a Saturday to take a section of a course that we are not doing great on. At the moment, these learners would be excluded from such opportunities.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Regulation of the English Language Sector: Discussion (Resumed). (21 May 2024)

Sorca Clarke: Tertiary education has a very important role to play, not only in lifelong learning but for people who want to change careers and directions of where they want to go. Following last week’s engagement, I spoke to one of the contributors. They told me about the scams that people have been caught up in. There is no other way of describing these other than absolute scams. People have...

Sorca Clarke: Transition is the correct term

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Regulation of the English Language Sector: Discussion (Resumed). (21 May 2024)

Sorca Clarke: Under the new IEM regime, what will be the changes to inspections? What will they look like and what sanctions will QQI have if it is found a school is not compliant?

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Mary Butler: I will keep it brief because I would only be reiterating what was said already. I am grateful for the opportunity to make some brief closing remarks on what has been a fascinating discussion. I thank Deputy Ó Snodaigh for initiating this Bill and the effort to address an issue that can become both serious and distressing for some in our communities, where they are in dispute with their...

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I will start where the Minister of State finished. This legislation was drafted in advance of the Mediation Act, but that is not to say that it should end because the Mediation Act has passed. There is a need for mediation and in fact the local authority in the city here often acts as a mediator where there is an antisocial tenant or a row between neighbours, especially in an estate that it...

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Mary Butler: No.

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Seán Ó Fearghaíl: Nor do kids.

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: They grow. That is their purpose, and it is the same with hedges. Kids are the same. They are not as dainty either. Most people would cut their hedge back every year but will not touch trees. For trees, you have to be capable of going up a ladder and able to manage all the safety of cutting down a tree and so on. Sometimes it happens when a new estate is being built and because it looks...

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Seán Ó Fearghaíl: Next to speak is Deputy Ó Murchú. Is there a problem with trees in Dundalk?

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Ruairi Ó Murchú: Yes, we have a problem with most things in Dundalk. I thank Deputy Ó Snodaigh for bringing forward the aptly-named Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill. I thank the Minister of State and the Government for not opposing it. Everyone agrees that this is the sort of thing that can become a big issue for neighbours and for many of us as elected representatives. I remember as a...

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Mary Butler: I am pleased to attend the debate to set out the Government's position on the Bill. I thank Deputy Ó Snodaigh for initiating the Bill, which is an effort to address the difficult matter of disputes that arise between neighbours over vegetation causing a nuisance. The Bill provides for mediation on neighbour disputes and formal adjudication, if necessary, by adjudication officers...

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Seán Ó Fearghaíl: This is the Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017. I hope the neighbours are not disputing over cabbages or anything like that, but I am sure Deputy Ó Snodaigh will tell us. The Government has indicated it is not opposing the Second Reading.

Neighbour Disputes (Vegetation) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (16 May 2024)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." Gabhaim buíochas leis an gCeann Comhairle. Tá sé go maith go bhfuil an deis seo againn agus nach bhfuil an Rialtas ag cur ina choinne seo. Tá súil agam, amach anseo, go mbeidh muid in ann tacú leis le déanamh cinnte de gur reachtaíocht é. Is mian liom mo bhuíochas a ghabháil le...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Bus Services (16 May 2024)

Mary Butler: I thank Deputy Whitmore for raising this important issue. The Minister of State, Deputy Chambers, has been delayed. I was on standby to take this and I was under the impression that the Minister of State would be here. I have taken note of the issues raised by the Deputy and I hope the script will be able to provide some of the answers. From the outset I want to clarify that the...
