Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Matt Carthy: 54. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment the meetings he has had, and-or the briefings he has received, in respect of the North-South Interconnector. [21467/24]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Matt Carthy: I ask the Minister of State to outline the meetings and briefings he and the Minister, Deputy Eamon Ryan, have had in respect of the North-South Interconnector.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Ossian Smyth: The North-South Interconnector is an essential infrastructure project that will link the electricity transmission networks of Ireland and Northern Ireland, leading to a more secure, affordable and sustainable supply of electricity across the island. As a transmission project, the North-South Interconnector is being undertaken by EirGrid, which is independent of the Minister, with EirGrid...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Matt Carthy: According to the Minister of State's response, the only briefing that was received was in respect of the North-South Ministerial Council. The only meeting-----

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Ossian Smyth: The most recent.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Matt Carthy: But that is not the question.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Seán Ó Fearghaíl: It asks about the meetings and briefings the Minister has had.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Matt Carthy: Yes and this is important. The Ceann Comhairle has ruled several questions on the North-South Interconnector out of order because the Department now claims that those questions do not fall under the remit of the Minister, despite the fact that similar questions have been previously answered by the Minister and his predecessors, and now-----

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Seán Ó Fearghaíl: Let us not get into the debate. Let us just talk about the issues. The issues clearly are the meetings the Minister has had and the briefings he has received.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Matt Carthy: I just want clarification on this. The response indicated that there was one meeting and one briefing. Is the Minister of State saying that there were others or that was the only information he had? Were they the only briefings or meetings that were held by either the Minister of State or the Minister?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Ossian Smyth: Sorry, that is the information I have to hand. It only relates to the most recent meeting. I am not aware of whether there were other meetings or briefings before that. If the Deputy has a specific period in mind, as the project has been going on for decades at this stage, I will come back with a better answer.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (14 May 2024)

Matt Carthy: Okay, but with due respect, the Minister has not been in office for decades. The Minister has been in office for four years. Either there were briefings and meetings that were too numerous to relay in a response to a parliamentary question, or there was a small number over that four-year period. If there was a small number, that information could be given to the House. The one thing I...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Electricity Generation (14 May 2024)

Ossian Smyth: I think the first part of the question was about delivery. It was about how much the Government has installed of new capacity. We have seen more than 2 GW of capacity installed over the course of the past four years. The fact there is now 1 GW of solar on the grid is incredible. I expect another 1.5 GW will be added this year and another 1.5 GW next year. Looking towards an 8 GW target...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Corporate Governance (14 May 2024)

Jennifer Whitmore: I wish to ask the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications to detail the process for the establishment of Re-Turn Ireland, the governance structures of that entity, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Corporate Governance (14 May 2024)

Ossian Smyth: A national deposit return scheme, DRS, has been introduced to encourage more people to recycle bottles and cans and to ensure we meet our ambitious EU targets for the recycling of those materials under EU single-use plastics and packaging legislation. The Separate Collection (Deposit Return Scheme) Regulations, SI 599 of 2021, makes it the responsibility of beverage producers to establish...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Corporate Governance (14 May 2024)

Jennifer Whitmore: I thank the Minister of State. I have a number of concerns about it. They may all be completely fine and not warranted, but there is no information on the Re-Turn website anywhere about the organisation, how it is structured, who the board of directors are or any of that information. When the Minister of State talks about transparency, it is not there at the moment. He talks about the...
