Tribunals of Inquiry: Motion (30 Jan 2008)

Alan Shatter: It is a tradition in this House that if someone has an interest in a matter, they should make a declaration of interest. Given that the newspaper to which the Minister is referring apparently pays him a regular wage for writing articles, the least he should do is identify it and make a declaration of interest.

Tribunals of Inquiry: Motion (30 Jan 2008)

Alan Shatter: Does the Minister get an extra bonus for advertising the newspaper in this House?

Health Services. (31 Jan 2008)

Alan Shatter: Question 5: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the new services she proposes to put in place to provide for adults and children suffering from cystic fibrosis; and if she will launch a public and ongoing advertising campaign to encourage the public to carry organ donor cards to facilitate the greater availability of organs for heart and lung transplant operations. [2890/08]

Health Services. (31 Jan 2008)

Alan Shatter: Would the Minister accept that the manner in which we have treated cystic fibrosis patients and their parents and families is a national disgrace and scandal? Is she aware there are over 1,100 patients with cystic fibrosis in this country at the moment, the highest proportion of patients per head of population of any other country? Is she aware that a person born in Ireland with cystic...

Health Services. (31 Jan 2008)

Alan Shatter: It is still substantially less than in the UK or Northern Ireland.

Health Services. (31 Jan 2008)

Alan Shatter: Is the Minister aware that since 1983 all newborn babies in Northern Ireland have been screened at birth for cystic fibrosis? Is she aware this not only allows an early diagnosis, but allows at an early stage for appropriate treatment to be commenced? Is she aware the average age in Ireland for discovering whether a child has cystic fibrosis is two years? There is also a gender gap as...

Health Services. (31 Jan 2008)

Alan Shatter: That will be three years.

Health Services. (31 Jan 2008)

Alan Shatter: How early in 2008 will it be awarded?

Health Services. (31 Jan 2008)

Alan Shatter: That is still three years away.

Health Services. (31 Jan 2008)

Alan Shatter: Why has it taken so long? Can it be in place this year?

Health Services: Motion (5 Feb 2008)

Alan Shatter: It is regrettable the Minister for Health and Children is not here. The Minister of State, Deputy Devins, might confirm whether her absence is due to her going to the Super Bowl in the United States. I would have thought a debate in this House on the problems within our health service, particularly those highlighted by my colleague, deserves greater priority than it is being given. I wish...

Health Services: Motion (5 Feb 2008)

Alan Shatter: What about neo-natal testing? Will the Minister of State tell the House when that will start?

Health Services: Motion (5 Feb 2008)

Alan Shatter: He does not know.

Passports Bill 2007: Report Stage (19 Feb 2008)

Alan Shatter: I move amendment No. 13: In page 8, line 24, to delete "may" and substitute "shall". I congratulate the Minister for Foreign Affairs on including this provision in the Bill. The provision is important because it recognises reality in this area, particularly for individuals who find themselves in a position of what the Bill refers to as "gender reassignment". In circumstances where a person...

Passports Bill 2007: Report Stage (19 Feb 2008)

Alan Shatter: Will the Minister of State respond in respect of the anomaly I mentioned but to which his script may not contain reference? It is anomalous that the Department of Foreign Affairs would recognise someone as being of female gender, while the Department of Health and Children or the HSE may insist that said person is a male. That is quite an odd position for the State to occupy, particularly...

Passports Bill 2007: Report Stage (19 Feb 2008)

Alan Shatter: It did not recognise that people would be referred to as having a different gender, depending on the document.

Passports Bill 2007: Report Stage (19 Feb 2008)

Alan Shatter: We should tidy this up.

Passports Bill 2007: Report Stage (19 Feb 2008)

Alan Shatter: I accept that.

Passports Bill 2007: Report Stage (19 Feb 2008)

Alan Shatter: I accept all of that. I am asking the Government to address the birth certificate issue, as it has addressed the matter with passports.

Passports Bill 2007: Report Stage (19 Feb 2008)

Alan Shatter: Does the Minister of State not believe it illogical that one document issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs describes a person as female and one issued by the Department of Health and Children would describe the person as male? Is it not an anomaly we should address?
