Alan Shatter: That was three years late as well.

Child Care: Motion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: I thank my colleagues in the Fine Gael Party and other Opposition Members who spoke so eloquently in support of this motion. I am somewhat puzzled by the contributions of Fianna Fáil Members. It is a tradition in the House for Government Members to support their Minister in whatever he or she is doing. The tradition has somewhat changed in the past 24 hours. Apparently, most Fianna Fáil...

Order of Business (21 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: As the Taoiseach does not appear to be aware of the contents of his legislative programme, perhaps I might be of assistance. Deputy Durkan is referring to the Criminal Justice (Forensic Sampling and Evidence) Bill which, from what I recall, has been promised for some six and a half years. Allegedly, this is one of the items of legislation that was to be published before Christmas.

Young People: Motion (21 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: I do not wish to interrupt the Minister unduly. Will his speech be distributed?

Young People: Motion (21 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: I move amendmentNo. 1: To delete all words after "Dáil Éireann" and substitute the following: "calls on the Government to submit to Dáil Éireann, within one month, a comprehensive plan of action which will deal with the many difficulties and challenges faced by young people in Ireland today, set out firm completion dates for action, measurable performance targets and assign responsibility...

Hospitals Building Programme. (21 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: What is the timeframe for providing this new facility in Tallaght? When will it open? Can the Minister confirm the report stated quite clearly that it is essential that it opens prior to, or simultaneously with, the new hospital to be built at the Mater site?

Hospitals Building Programme. (21 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: What hours of availability are envisaged for this hospital? In the context of accident and emergency, for example, will the hospital be open 24/7 or will it close at some time?

Hospitals Building Programme. (21 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: Considering the burgeoning population of south Dublin and the outer regions, for which Tallaght Hospital currently caters, and the investment in the construction of the facility, it is a false economy to close the hospital from 12 midnight to 8 a.m. daily. There may be serious night-time emergencies for children and the proximity of the hospital can be crucial in saving the life of a child....

Confidence in Minister for Health and Children: Motion (27 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: The Minister should apologise for setting up the HSE.

Confidence in Minister for Health and Children: Motion (27 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: The Minister tries to silence those who are courageous in speaking out. She has muzzled consultants and doctors around the country.

Confidence in Minister for Health and Children: Motion (27 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: It is outrageous. The Government is trying to muzzle everyone in the health services.

Confidence in Minister for Health and Children: Motion (27 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: The Minister cannot have it both ways in muzzling people and then welcoming them as whistleblowers.

Confidence in Minister for Health and Children: Motion (27 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: The Minister has created a dysfunctional bureaucracy and she is blaming the bureaucracy she created.

Confidence in Minister for Health and Children: Motion (27 Nov 2007)

Alan Shatter: The Minister has created a dysfunctional bureaucracy that is accountable to nobody. That is a classical reason why it does not work.
