Brian Stanley: We could put 20 houses in Rathdowney, however, that look the same as 40 houses in Mountmellick, which is a bigger town, that are the same as 60 houses in Portlaoise, which is a bigger town again, and nobody would object to that. The texture could be changed slightly, the cost and the architectural fees could be reduced, a lot of the nonsense, bureaucracy and back and forth could be cut out,...

Brian Stanley: ...we finish, I acknowledge the progress with the land aggregation scheme, LAGS, sites in Laois. They are nearly all either active or a plan is in place for them, including the ones in Portlaoise and Rathdowney. I will ask about the one in Mountrath. The HSE may want a site on that. The officials might be able to tell me whether there has been agreement on the acquisition of part of the...

Health Service Funding: Motion [Private Members] (24 Oct 2023)

Brian Stanley: ...being discharged from acute hospitals such as Portlaoise. It will also restrict the HSE's ability to advance the provision of primary care centres and local health centres in towns like Portarlington, Rathdowney and Mountrath, as well as Portlaoise, which is a town heading towards having a population of 30,000 people and still does not have a primary care centre. The midlands will...

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2021 - Sport Ireland and Sport Ireland Facilities DAC (15 Jun 2023)

Brian Stanley: That track needs to be finished. Its completion is important. I have been a supporter of that cycle track. Without being too parochial, I will ask Dr. May about St. Fergal's College, Rathdowney. We met the Minister for Education yesterday about the school's need for a school hall. It was built as a vocational school in 1937. It covers the southern third of Laois and there is no indoor...

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2021 - Sport Ireland and Sport Ireland Facilities DAC (15 Jun 2023)

Brian Stanley: ...it down. Regardless, it is unsuitable for a growing school with a growing population. Some 42 Ukrainian families are moving to the area and they will be welcomed, in general, by the people of Rathdowney. There are international protection applicants in the area. For a very small town, it has taken on a lot despite having few resources. I am going to ask representatives of the...

Chapter 6: Central Government Funding of Local Authorities
(30 Mar 2023)

Brian Stanley: Many of the areas they are going to are already economically disadvantaged. Forty families moved into modular accommodation in Rathdowney, County Laois. It has been positive, by and large. The areas they are going into, such as Rathdowney, have a low level of economic development and there is not much economic activity ,apart from agriculture and sectors related to agriculture. If further...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Schools Building Projects (14 Feb 2023)

Brian Stanley: I thank the Minister of State for his reply. This is about playing catch-up. This is about the children of Rathdowney and south Laois having the same opportunities and facilities as everyone else. As I said, the school opened in 1937. My father went there in the 1940s and those classrooms are still there. I welcome the fact the new classrooms were approved. This is welcomed by all and...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Schools Building Projects (14 Feb 2023)

Brian Stanley: ...them would be here. I trust that the Minister of State, Deputy Ossian Smyth, will take back the information and see that it is followed up on. The issue I want to raise is St. Fergal's College in Rathdowney, founded in 1937. It still does not have a physical education, PE, hall 86 years later. It is the only secondary school in the county that does not have a PE hall. In 2010, the...

Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
Chapter 8 - Contract payments in respect of Convention Centre Dublin
(15 Dec 2022)

Brian Stanley: I got letters about the site in Rathdowney in south Laois. The first I heard about it was when I saw it in one of the local newspapers. As a local Deputy, as soon as I had bought the paper, questions were coming into my office about it. It puts us in an awful position. I had to say to people straight up that I had only just learned about it having read about it in the local paper. While...

Brian Stanley: ...understand that, which is why I prefaced my remarks in the way I did. Could I have a briefing note within a week? I believe that is a fair timeline. The note should cover the size of the site in Rathdowney, what exactly is planned for it and the timeline for locating the first group there and should include any other information Mr. Buckley feels would be helpful. At least we will then...

Brian Stanley: ...that there is problem. There were local clinics in different towns. Take County Laois, for example. There would have been a clinic perhaps one morning a week for two hours in Mountrath, Abbeyleix, Rathdowney, Mountmellick, Portarlington and places such as that. In fact, in Portarlington and Rathdowney, there would have been a service because they have small social welfare offices....

Chapter 14: Classification of workers for PRSI purposes
(1 Dec 2022)

Brian Stanley: In towns such as Mountmellick, Mountrath, Rathdowney, Graiguecullen and places like that, the service being pulled has caused a problem among the most vulnerable. If it can be done, I have no problem with it being part time and one morning a week or whatever. However, we need to reinstate that service.

Retained Firefighters: Motion [Private Members] (15 Nov 2022)

Brian Stanley: ...the Taoiseach on the floor of the Dáil. New recruits are not entering the service. We need a solution quickly. Crews are on call 24-7-12 in the various areas and are in understaffed stations. In Rathdowney, for example, the crew is down to five people, although there are supposed to be nine at a minimum. In Abbeyleix, it is down to six. That is the situation we are in. I want...

Health Service Executive - Financial Statements 2021
(29 Sep 2022)

Brian Stanley: ...and the answers should be as short as possible. The capital spend on CH0 8 for 2021 was €5.9 million. which appears to be very low. Will she confirm that €100,000 was spent on Erkina House in Rathdowney, County Laois? I do not want to be abrupt but a yes-no will do.
