Select Committee on Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (12 Apr 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: I would obviously like to see that because this is one of the key problems that we have in the last number of years in the escalation of the housing crisis, including, it would seem, NAMA hoarding land as well. I will wait to see what the Minister does, but I would like to have the potential to introduce an amendment as well on that issue.

Establishment of a Commission of Inquiry into the National Asset Management Agency: Statements (1 Feb 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: This is a very important discussion because the issue of NAMA is on the list of practically everybody outside this building. I have to refer to the totally self-serving contribution we have just heard from Deputy Burton. She tried to make all sorts of excuses as to why a commission is not needed. She complained that lawyers might get rich; in that case, we should cap their fees and take...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government: Derelict Sites and Underused Spaces: Discussion (1 Feb 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: May I make a point of order? It is unfortunate that NAMA is being debated in the Dáil when we are having a meeting of the housing committee on a matter so important. It is not that I am not interested but I am trying to prepare to speak in the Dáil shortly. Can we try to ensure these clashes do not happen again? I know it is difficult. The subject of NAMA is very much related...

Written Answers — Department of Finance: NAMA Property Sales (31 Jan 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: ...the Minister for Finance if he will provide a list of residential development land in the greater Dublin area, Cork city, Galway city and Limerick city involved in sales of properties and loans by NAMA to vulture funds. [4327/17]

Questions on Promised Legislation (26 Jan 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: ...tenants that one could possibly think about in this country: people in direct provision. They were being given refuge by one arm of the State, whose loans were sold by another arm of the State, NAMA. It is a quite incredible situation. What is the Government going to do about these vulture funds getting their hands on, in this case, a State service for the most vulnerable? What happens...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government: Quarterly Progress Report Strategy for Rented Sector: Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government (18 Jan 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: .... Last night the Minister said it takes time to build houses and yet, my point is, that the available sites are not even being developed by the council. The other key problem we have is that NAMA, which is State run, is selling off so much land at the moment to vulture funds. This is land that would definitely be needed. If one considers the greater Blanchardstown area, which is the...

Private Members' Business - Anti-Evictions Bill 2016: Second Stage [Private Members] (17 Jan 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: ...that he had given some commitment to the Strand tenants in Limerick that they would not be affected if the sales went ahead. It is possibly because the vulture fund has strong connections with NAMA and the Government. Will the Minister do the same for the Tyrrelstown tenants? He stepped in to help the Strand tenants in Limerick, whom I support fully; fair play to the Anti-Austerity...

Select Committee on Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government: Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016: Committee Stage (13 Dec 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: ...thousands more in the pipeline. Dublin is not the only location in which there is homelessness and a housing crisis, but it is a key location. The conclusion is that developers are hoarding land. the head of NAMA says the same thing, even about NAMA. This issue came up at the housing committee and I hope the work done by it will count for something. In one council area, Dún...

Select Committee on Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government: Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016: Committee Stage (13 Dec 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: ...have been on strike. They have been on strike for the past year and a half. They have held on to the planning permissions that they have, not progressed them and waited for prices to rise. Even NAMA, in which the Government is involved, has plenty of land that it could have developed over the past number of years but it let the housing crisis escalate. Maybe that is why the Minister is...

Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016 [Seanad]: Second Stage (1 Dec 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: ...applications whatsoever were delayed at local level. We really need to hear much more evidence from the Minister and the proponents of the Bill that this is necessary. What is delaying housing now? NAMA, a huge landholder in key areas where there is a housing crisis, has been sitting on land for a number of years and the developers are dysfunctional after the crash. However, it now...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness: Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government (21 Sep 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: However, I pointed out that the price of private housing is being jacked up by developers, some of whom have been through NAMA and have had the largesse of the taxpayer put in front of their feet. They are also getting money from the NTMA through Activate Capital, for example, and they are shooting up the price of houses. The Minister is either powerless to do anything about it or he does...

Housing Strategy: Statements (19 Jul 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: It is up to 75%, as well as money upfront for Part Vs and a range of other rewards. The Minister never listens to anything we have to say, but will he listen to the CEO of NAMA? He said it is not that housing is unprofitable for private developers, it is just not profitable enough. Apparently a profit of €20,000 is not enough for them, so the Minister is now proposing to reward them...
