Alice-Mary Higgins: ...and record we care to read and in every place in the ground we have been asked to look. If we do not know that abuse or neglect took place, for what did the Taoiseach apologise to the survivors of Magdalen laundries? We know there has been abuse and neglect. The task of the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes is to determine the extent, depth and various awful...

Katherine Zappone: ...Devine about the 2012 report, the files were surrendered to the HSE when the homes were closed. The information in question was examined by the HSE as part of its input to the examination of the Magdalen laundries. All the issues of concern, which I share, are within the remit of the current commission. It is important to point out that these serious concerns about high death rates and...

Frances Black: ...on a for-profit basis. Last year, eight companies were paid €43.5 million to provide these centres. Is this the best use of our resources? As we try to come to terms with the abuse inflicted on people in the mother and baby homes, the Magdalen laundries and other State and religious institutions, we often look back and ask ourselves how this happened. This is how it happens. It...

Mick Wallace: ...to Ireland's abortion laws. The same committee on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women has called for an independent investigation into Ireland's mother and baby homes and Magdalen laundries, saying that victims should get appropriate compensation and official apologies. We are probably not the best to be throwing stones at anyone but Saudi Arabia is in a...

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Residential Institutions Redress Scheme Eligibility (4 May 2017)

Frances Fitzgerald: The Magdalen Restorative Justice Ex-gratia scheme applies to 10 Magdalen institutions and 2 specific training schools. It does not extend beyond those institutions and there are no plans to extend it beyond those institutions. As the legal proceedings to which the Deputy refers are ongoing, I am restricted from commenting in detail on the matters raised.

Standing Order 27: Motion (2 May 2017)

Bríd Smith: ...of what we might do would be silly were it not for the Tuam babies, the national maternity hospital and the Sisters of Charity, repeal the eighth and the Citizens' Assembly, the legacy of the Magdalen laundries, the Christian Brothers and the persecution that people suffered in this country, Savita Halappanavar, Ms X and Ms Y. The list goes on and on. The outcome of the Citizens'...

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Residential Institutions Redress Scheme (2 May 2017)

Frances Fitzgerald: I presume that the Deputy is specifically referring to the Magdalen Restorative Justice Ex-gratia Scheme which is administered in my Department and the Residential Institutions Redress Scheme which is administered in the Department of Education and Skills. In relation to the Magdalen Restorative Justice Ex-gratia Scheme, the position is that my predecessor as Minister for Justice and...

Catherine Connolly: I would like to think that but then we fast-forward to 2009 and we have the Minister for Education and Science of the time making a statement in the Dáil that the State had no input into the Magdalen laundries. That has since been disproved and we have had the Magdalen report. Now we are up to the mother and baby homes and again the State is doing its damnedest. My question to Mr....

Maire Devine: .... The report is an attempt at washing Ireland's dirtiest open secret - our concentration camps, our babies for adoption factories and our slave trade. Look at the length of time it took for the Magdalen women to be given an apology. They were made to beg for years. Even now, what was promised remains to be fulfilled. As the final report is not due to be published until next year,...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Apr 2017)

Frances Black: ...thousands of people in direct provision throughout this country is nothing short of a scandal. A country coming to terms with the awful abuse inflicted on people in the mother and baby homes, the Magdalen laundries and other State and religious institutions is now sowing the seeds for future shame. The treatment of people fleeing some of the worst abuses around the world is shameful....

Direct Provision: Statements (30 Mar 2017) See 4 other results from this debate

Richard Boyd Barrett: ...of children living for years in this system of direct provision is a scandal beyond scandals. It is not an exaggeration to say that allowing this to persist is on a par with industrial schools and the Magdalen laundries. Tinkering around and reforms, while they may improve things marginally, are just not good enough. The key here is the issue of right to work that has already been...

National Children's Hospital: Motion [Private Members] (29 Mar 2017)

Mattie McGrath: ...table, kiss your children good night. The truth is like now; it cannot but exist at every moment, in every place. You can scorn the past. [We had a debate on Ferns recently. We had Cloyne only last week, we had the Magdalen laundries, the Tuam mother and baby home and we had Grace. What more do we want?] You were not there, any of you, or me. You would have done differently. You...

Topical Issue Debate: Residential Institutions Statutory Fund (29 Mar 2017)

Clare Daly: ...is absolutely reprehensible as far as I am concerned. Clearly, what we have here is the sort of continuation of the hard-line approach being adopted by the State to survivors which has been evident in the Magdalen laundries and in the exclusion of the Bethany homes from the mother and baby home inquiries. I do not think it is acceptable for the Minister or for other members of the...
