Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (12 May 2021)

Pauline Tully: ...appointments several hours apart. Why, if the HSE is asking for an postcode, are people from the same household not being given appointments close together? Why are people being asked travel long distances? Some do not have their own transport or access to public transport.

Caring for Carers: Motion [Private Members] (31 Mar 2021)

Pauline Tully: ...not be allowed to happen. Sufficient spaces must be made available to cater for emergencies and those who are booked into respite. The application process for the carer's allowance takes far too long, with carers sometimes left waiting for months for a decision on the allocation of the payment. That needs to be addressed. Carers should not have to go searching for, or inquiring about,...

Impact of Covid-19 on Women for International Women’s Day: Statements (4 Mar 2021)

Pauline Tully: .... In addition, the majority of workers in the tourism and hospitality sector are women. The majority of workers in retail are women. These are the sectors which have been forced to close for the longest periods and have received the least support. Many people involved in those sectors may end up not returning to employment, which means the gender pay gap will widen. Women in the...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Qualifications Recognition (4 Mar 2021)

Pauline Tully: For far too long, SNAs have been treated as the poor relation within education. They deserve respect, and where they undertake training, it must be properly accredited and recognised. The Minister of State encouraged SNAs to take part in the first national training programme for SNAs at UCD. However, no clarity has been provided on the accreditation of this course. SNAs are going around...

Reopening Schools and Leaving Certificate Examinations: Statements (3 Mar 2021)

Pauline Tully: ...no threat that the whole school provision will be reviewed. There has been much discussion about the return to school of children with additional educational needs. I welcome the reopening, at long last, of special classes and units in recent weeks. However, there is a cohort of students about whom I am very concerned, namely, students with additional educational needs who are in a...

Report of the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes: Statements (Resumed) (20 Jan 2021)

Pauline Tully: The long-awaited report of the commission of investigation into mother and baby homes is, unfortunately, not what many expected. Survivors have waited for five years for this report and so many are disappointed that, after all that time, they just feel let down. One survivor contacted me on Monday to thank my party for all the work that it has done to support survivors. She told me that...

Covid-19 (Education): Statements (14 Jan 2021)

Pauline Tully: ...urgently need clarity on when they will receive the vaccine given the importance of their role. The Minister and her Department have left leaving certificate students in limbo for far too long. It has been an extremely difficult 12 moths for sixth year students. They lost an enormous amount of learning time in fifth year and now have to contend with the chaos of the Government...

Combating Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence: Statements (19 Nov 2020)

Pauline Tully: ...looked for a resourced national service development plan to be led by Safe Ireland in consultation with front-line services. This service development plan would be the start of a comprehensive national and long-term response to the enormous everyday problem of domestic abuse and coercive control.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: National Disability Inclusion Strategy: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Nov 2020)

Pauline Tully: ...one third by 2021 and to closing them eventually. According to HIQA, there are still almost 3,000 people in congregated settings and that does not count all the young people in nursing homes. How long will that process take?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: National Disability Inclusion Strategy: Discussion (4 Nov 2020)

Pauline Tully: I welcome the Minister and the Minister of State to the meeting. I, too, welcome the formation of the committee. It was called for for a long time but did not happen until now, so it is great that it has happened. As the Minister noted, disability is not just a health issue; it is a much broader issue and I fully agree with that. We have to be careful not to overlap with the other...

Financial Resolutions 2020 - Financial Resolution No. 7: General (Resumed) (14 Oct 2020)

Pauline Tully: ...funding for disability services is welcome and I commend the Government on this allocation. I commend all those families and providers that worked so hard to bring this about. That they were left so long and had to fight so hard is an indictment of this and previous Governments, though, and much more needs to be done, but it is a good first step. Although I welcome the allocation, I...

Disability Services: Motion [Private Members] (6 Oct 2020)

Pauline Tully: ...: acknowledges that: — families, carers and service providers have been stretched to incredible lengths, many to breaking point throughout the course of this pandemic; — the personal toll and long-term impact of the withdrawal of care and supports for people with disabilities, their families and their carers is deeply worrying; — due to Covid-19, disability...

Child Poverty: Motion [Private Members] (30 Sep 2020)

Pauline Tully: ...O'Malley introduced free education in 1966 he described it as "the one great leveller-upper". I am not sure about his grammar but his sentiment was absolutely correct. However, education is no longer free. Uniforms, books, materials, and transport all cost money. I know there is a back-to-school allowance but it needs to be broadened and increased. School closures as a result of...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (24 Sep 2020)

Pauline Tully: I want to raise the issue of children waiting for psychological assessments. The waiting list is quite long as it is but it has been exacerbated by Covid. Many psychologists have been drafted in to conduct testing and tracing. As a result, many children are waiting on the list and they cannot get the supports they need without the assessments. Can the Minister give me an update on that?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Autism Support Services (15 Sep 2020)

Pauline Tully: .... The motion received widespread party support at that time. A commitment was given to deliver an autism empowerment strategy for Ireland. The issues affecting autistic children and adults are long-standing and families, children and adults have been battling for years for their basic rights and entitlements. Children face lengthy waiting times for assessments, they struggle to locate...

Services for People with Disabilities: Statements (10 Sep 2020)

Pauline Tully: ...with disabilities. For example, stroke survivors need rehabilitation and community care. That will enable them to improve disability outcomes and their quality of life, reduce the likelihood of long-term residential care, even reduce their time in hospital and reduce their risk of another stroke. Without this care, however, the opposite is true. I am told that therapists are not...

Back to School, Further and Higher Education and Special Education: Statements (3 Sep 2020)

Pauline Tully: ..., and every effort should be made to encourage students back to school without resorting to such action. Some parents have indicated that because children are out of school and a routine for so long, they are finding it difficult to get the children back to school. When will therapeutic services resume? I acknowledge this may not relate directly to the Minister of State's portfolio but...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Review of the Reopening of Schools (Resumed) (2 Sep 2020)

Pauline Tully: ...available to students in other circumstances. Some parents to whom I have spoken are afraid that their son or daughter would refuse to return to school because of having been out of school for so long. Those parents and children also need support.

Early Years Childcare: Motion [Private Members] (21 Jul 2020)

Pauline Tully: I wish to support the motion. I commend Deputy Funchion on tabling it. Childcare in Ireland is at crisis point and has been so since long before Covid. It has been edging towards disaster for years, but little or nothing has been done to address the situation. It is now urgent. The cost of childcare was astronomical even before Covid. Prices are now being forced upwards again as a...
