Peadar Tóibín: 472. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection the current number of applications for the long-term carer contributions scheme; the number of successful and unsuccessful applications since the commencement of the scheme; and the current waiting time for applications to be assessed, in tabular form. [19428/24]

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Driver Test (5 Mar 2024)

Peadar Tóibín: 162. Protection of Employees (Trade Union Subscriptions) Bill 2024: Second Stage [Private Members] (28 Feb 2024)

Peadar Tóibín: ...and real right to collective bargaining in this State but that does not exist at the moment. As a result, workers' rights are weakened in the context of achieving justice. We need to make sure that life-long learning is provided to workers and that they have a right to that within the system. If the Government continues to stand on the sideline and allows large companies such as Boliden...

Sustainable Fisheries Sector and Coastal Communities: Statements, Questions and Answers (15 Feb 2024)

Peadar Tóibín: In that case, with the figures I started off with, the long-term effect is true.

Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Services (13 Feb 2024)

Peadar Tóibín: ...); the steps being taken by the HSE to address the funding requirements necessary to continue to provide services to persons within the care of the organisation in order to ensure the immediate and long-term survival of the organisation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6069/24]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Rail Network (1 Feb 2024)

Peadar Tóibín: The planning and legal system is under the Government's responsibility and influence. The staffing of the planning system is a job for the Government. The legal system takes so long because there are not enough staff in the system. It is grinding to a halt and is far slower than those of most other countries. They are not external excuses in terms of delivery of this project. The...

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works (Revised)
(31 Jan 2024)

Peadar Tóibín: ...November 2023, it was stated that it would be nine years at least before the systems would be in place. Is that correct? Nine years from now is 2033, and the process started in 2015. That is a long time for the Government to react to what is an emergency situation, where businesses and families are being put out of their homes and where lives are being put at risk. Is that the timeline...

Tribunal of Inquiry into certain matters relating to the Complaints Processes in the Defence Forces: Motion (24 Jan 2024)

Peadar Tóibín: ...be the primary objective of the tribunal. Instead, the tribunal only seeks to investigate the complaints process. The complaints process is already proven to be corrupt within the State. There is a long history of reports already written on this. In 1990, the Report of the Commission on Remuneration and Conditions of Service in the Defence Forces stated that the complaints procedure...

Housing and Homeless Prevention: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (23 Jan 2024)

Peadar Tóibín: ...real issue I have. I have mentioned this next point before, namely, that I believe there is an extreme level of Government incompetence currently. Some of this is because the Government has been in power for so long, while some of it is because many people in Government have not held down a job outside of it for so long. Looking at the situation right now, the response to a...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (23 Jan 2024)

Peadar Tóibín: Tara Mines is the biggest lead and zinc mine in Europe. It is one of the largest employers in Meath and its closure has been one of the biggest economic blows to the east midlands area for a long period of time. A key element of the closure was the fact that electricity prices in this country are the highest in Europe. Tara Mines management has given a plan to workers. That plan is a race...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Emergency Departments (18 Jan 2024)

Peadar Tóibín: ...metal plates put into her leg that her body has rejected and that she needs removed. She is in constant pain and is vomiting due to morphine but the National Orthopaedic Hospital has said that she is no longer its patient. She has resorted to sending pictures of her body, which is rejecting these metal plates, to politicians. We see from talking to family and friends, from our...

Digital Services Bill 2023: Second Stage (13 Dec 2023)

Peadar Tóibín: ...democratic rights. In the past, the left has been the sector of society that has fought censorship and has been the voice of ordinary men and women across the country. However, in many ways, that is no longer the case. What we are seeing, unfortunately, is a move towards a more authoritarian-type instinct among left-leaning political parties. Ireland is now, unfortunately, becoming...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (13 Dec 2023)

Peadar Tóibín: ...Three months have passed since the Act passed into law. It seems that for three months we have been speaking to the Attorney General looking for advice on what we should do. That is an incredibly long time. My worry is that years the Government's strategy with the British Government has been to adopt a softly-softly approach and use diplomatic tones. The Tory Government does not...

Immigration: Motion [Private Members] (6 Dec 2023)

Peadar Tóibín: ...of the people do not discuss this issue respectfully, this debate does not disappear. It will be pushed underground into the hands of those who will use it for nefarious purposes. Ireland has a long history of taboo issues and brushing major problems under the carpet. The issues do not disappear. They always have to be dealt with. Remember who we are. We are Teachtaí...

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Agriculture Schemes (6 Dec 2023)

Peadar Tóibín: ...when his Department will approve applications for the farmers who have submitted TAMS applications; how much of the €370 million earmarked for TAMS funding has been given to farmers to date; how long on average are farmers waiting for approval of their applications; the longest wait for approval of a TAMS application, given that many farmers are unable to draw down funding this year...

Renters: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (5 Dec 2023)

Peadar Tóibín: ...Government to turn around a local authority home so that it can be relet. Meanwhile, it takes three weeks for a private rental unit to be turned around to be relet. The fact that it is taking so long to turn around local authority homes is a failure in public administration, which is costing lives. Again, it is worthwhile to do the maths on this. I went onto daft.iebefore this debate...

Planning and Development Bill 2023: Second Stage (30 Nov 2023)

Peadar Tóibín: .... I also want to talk about judicial reviews. We often hear in the media that the Government blames judicial reviews for the fact that planning applications do not proceed. I agree that it is taking way too long for judicial reviews to proceed through the courts but that is because the courts system itself is banjaxed. It is completely inefficient and it does not have enough...

Policing, Protests and Public Order: Statements (28 Nov 2023)

Peadar Tóibín: ...calls for the murder of immigrants on social media. This is a shocking indictment of where this country is at. There is a small nexus of ethno-nationalists stoking up racism in our capital, a city that has a long and proud republican history of equality. The Government and the Garda need to get their act together. The Garda operation on the day was one of chaos. This is not a criticism...

Vote 17 – Public Appointments Service (Supplementary)
Vote 18 – National Shared Services Office (Supplementary)
Vote 43 – Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (Supplementary)
(22 Nov 2023)

Peadar Tóibín: ...I am a left-of-centre political activist and I like to see the delivery of public procurement, but my faith in this concept has been deeply damaged by this Government's record in this area. Why, then, is it taking so long for projects, such as the Midleton flood defence work, to even get to the stage of applying for planning permission, never mind issues around court cases that may or may...

Vote 18 – National Shared Services Office (Supplementary)
Vote 43 – Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (Supplementary)
(22 Nov 2023)

Peadar Tóibín: ...the State has. Earlier I mentioned that there are 3,500 vacant local authority homes which would actually accommodate everybody who was in emergency accommodation at the moment. I mentioned how long it is taking to flip those houses around compared to the private sector. The Minister of State would have to agree that this is a difficulty. There are also 150 empty State properties....
